Online Sports Betting Coming to Missouri

Missouri to become the 39th state with legalized online sports betting

Last year in November, Amendment 2 to the Missouri state constitution passed with the narrowest of margins. 50.1% of voters were in favor of the amendment, which paves the way for Missouri to join over 75% of the other states in the US that allow online sports betting in some form. The amendment also legalizes sports betting at the state’s 13 casinos and in special districts near major pro sports stadiums.

Missouri Sports Betting Breakdown

Missouri’s path to legalizing sports betting has been years in the making and hasn’t been without its share of ups and downs along the way. The campaign to legalize sports betting in Missouri received over $55 million of financial backing, largely from major online sports betting sites such as FanDuel and DraftKings. Many proponents of the amendment say the backing highlights the benefits of legalizing sports betting, including as it has done in other states, potential boosts to Missouri education through tax revenue.

In the end, Missouri voters made their voices known, passing the amendment, and paving the way for a regulated and potentially lucrative sports gambling market. Thanks to the proposed tax rate of 10%—bettors stand to win more than in neighbouring states with higher tax rates, a factor that makes Missouri very appealing to operators.

The Missouri Gaming Commission (MGC) will oversee the regulation of sports betting, ensuring that the industry operates fairly and responsibly. As the state prepares to launch sports betting, residents can look forward to a wide range of betting options.

Status of Missouri Sports Betting

As of now, sports betting in Missouri will begin on Dec. 1 2025 at the latest. The two available “untethered” licenses will be awarded by the MGC on Aug 15th. Most believe that these will go to DraftKings and FanDuel given their investment in the campaign, but anything could happen. BetMGM, Bet365 and Caesars Sportsbook have already been confirmed to receive licenses based on partnerships with Missouri sports franchises or physical casinos.  Other big names in sportsbooks, such as ESPN BET, Fanatics, and Underdog, are also likely to enter the Missouri market. Each of Missouri’s six professional sports franchises are eligible for one online sports betting license, ensuring a diverse and competitive market.
