ATP tennis currently features over 60 tournaments a year with the world’s best tennis players battling it out both indoors and outdoors on grass, clay and hard courts. In larger tournaments, especially in the first few rounds, savvy bettors may avoid moneyline bets as the odds aren’t really favorable as high ranked players are having matches against low or unranked players. However, sharp bettors will look at the over/under lines, where the betting odds are much better.
The over/under, or total games, bet involves predicting whether the total number of games played in a match will be over or under a specific threshold. For our example below, the line has been set at 21.5 games, and you decide whether the total games played by both players will be more or less than that number. It is very important when looking at over/under or total games to review the format of the match or tournament as this can have a large impact on the likely or possible number of games for the match.
Example Match: Player A vs. Player B
Over 21.5 Games: -150
Under 21.5 Games: +125
In our example, a $100 bet on the under-total would pay out $125 if the match ends with 22 or fewer games (6-4, 6-4, for example). On the other hand, a $150 bet on the over-total would pay out a $100, if the match were to exceed 22 games (7-5, 6-4, for example).
